Hungary to introduce SZÉP card for pensioners by 2030
The Hungarian government has announced the gradual introduction of a SZÉP card specifically for pensioners, a program set to roll out between 2027 and 2030. The initiative aims to support more than 2 million elderly citizens whose monthly pension is below 500,000 forints.
The funds from the card can be used for food, medicine, and leisure or rest activities. According to the announcement made in the Parliament, the 2027 budget includes 90 billion forints for the first stage of this program.
While specific amounts per person have not been officially codified in law, estimates suggest that those with pensions below 250,000 forints might receive approximately 50,000 forints, while those between 250,000 and 500,000 forints could receive around 25,000 forints. The program is expected to expand incrementally until 2030.
