Hungary to overhaul night transport and launch a national transport organizer

From July 1, Hungary will expand its night public‑transport network in Budapest and the surrounding agglomeration, adding new or more frequent routes to Érd, Vác, Balassagyarmat, Gyömrő and Vecsés, and aligning them with metro lines for direct city‑centre departures. The upgrades also integrate the state‑run Volánbusz services with the city’s BKK night lines, with further suburban additions planned for the second half of summer.

Transport Minister Vitézy Dávid announced a parallel reform to create a nationwide transport organizer modeled on the Budapest Transport Center (BKK). The new body will plan, order and oversee public‑transport services, set timetables and fares, and work with a state‑owned company that will manage €1.8 billion of EU‑funded rolling‑stock purchases. The plan includes buying 42 new suburban EMU sets for lines 5‑7 and at least 35 new InterCity trains, preparing for the EU’s 2033 end to railway monopolies and future competition among service providers.
