Hungary unveils 2027 budget with tax cuts and pension increases

Prime Minister Péter Magyar has unveiled the 2027 budget proposal for Hungary, which he described as a plan for the country's reconstruction and a move toward justice and progress. The budget includes several major fiscal changes aimed at supporting families, pensioners, and low-income workers.

Key measures include reducing the personal income tax for those earning below 680,000 forints per month and lowering the tax rate for minimum wage earners to 9 percent starting January 1, 2027. The government also plans to double the family allowance and maintain tax exemptions for young people and certain mothers, though a 1 million forint monthly income cap will be introduced for mothers' tax-free status.

Social security and pension reforms are central to the plan. The minimum old-age pension is set to increase from 28,500 forints to 120,000 forints. Additionally, the budget allocates significant funds for wage increases in the public sector, including a 17 percent increase for healthcare workers and 21.5 percent for education support staff.

Infrastructure and education also receive substantial investment. The government announced a long-term school development program with an initial 10 billion forint allocation, alongside significant funding for railway and road improvements. The budget aims for a 4.9 percent GDP-ratio deficit target, supported by expenditure cuts and new revenue streams such as wealth and corporate taxes.
