Hungary to reconstruct Hercegszántó–Béreg border crossing

The Hungarian government has decided to proceed with the complete reconstruction of the Hercegszántó–Bački Breg (Béreg) road border crossing. The Ministry of Transport and Investment is expected to launch the public procurement process for the construction in the coming weeks.

According to Minister Dávid Vitézy, the upgraded crossing will support heavy freight traffic and operate on a continuous 24-hour basis. The development plan includes dedicated lanes for trucks and buses, expanded capacity for passenger vehicles, a parking area for 40–42 trucks, and facilities for pedestrians and cyclists.

Currently, international freight traffic between Hungary and Serbia is limited to the Röszke and Tompa crossings, with Röszke experiencing significant congestion of up to 40,000 vehicles daily. The new development aims to relieve pressure on the M5 motorway and the southern sector of the M0 motorway, while improving connectivity between Southern Hungary and Vojvodina. The project also facilitates access to the M6 motorway via the Mohács Bridge for traffic entering from Serbia.
