Hungary to reform publicly funded dental care system

The Hungarian government is initiating a restructuring of publicly funded dental care following concerns that the current financing system is unsustainable. Krisztina Popráczy, the State Secretary responsible for primary and integrated care, noted that public funding covers only about one-third of the actual costs for many dental interventions, despite rising expenses for materials, sterilization, and wages.

To address these issues, the government is establishing a permanent dental working group comprising practicing dentists, chamber representatives, and health policy experts. Immediate measures include increasing wage support for young dentists to make the sector more attractive and ensuring the availability of emergency dental services nationwide.

The reform also aims to resolve legal and wage disparities affecting school dentists. Moving forward, the working group will assess the true costs of various procedures and review specialized fields such as orthodontics, oral surgery, and periodontology to implement systemic changes.
