Hungary to restore parental and teacher decision-making on school readiness

The Hungarian Ministry of Education is preparing a legislative proposal that would return decision-making power regarding school readiness to parents and kindergarten teachers. Starting from the 2027/2028 school year, if both the parent and the kindergarten teacher agree that a child is ready for school, the Educational Authority will no longer need to make the decision.

Under the current system, children who turn six by August 31 are required to start school. If a parent requests a one-year delay, the Educational Authority makes the final determination. Under the proposed changes, if a parent and teacher disagree on a child's readiness, a professional committee from the pedagogical service will examine the child to assist in reaching a decision.

Judit Kereki, State Secretary for Early Childhood Wellbeing, confirmed the plan following discussions with major teacher unions. The Democratic Union of Teachers (PDSZ) supports the change, though union representatives have suggested that the deadlines for submitting postponement requests should also be reviewed to better reflect a child's developmental progress.
