Hungary to revise 2026‑27 school year schedule and assessment rules

The Hungarian Ministry of Education is considering amendments to the draft decree for the 2026/2027 academic year. Proposed changes include adjustments to the national assessment system, greater flexibility for school‑organised theme days, and revised digital work‑time regulations for the upcoming senior‑year examinations.

The current timetable sets the first day of school on 1 September 2026 and the last day on 18 June 2027, with 180 teaching days. Suggested revisions would allow schools more freedom in scheduling theme‑day weeks and could reduce non‑teaching days from six to five to preserve the 180‑day minimum. The draft also contemplates simplifying the nationwide competency tests by measuring fewer grades and subjects, while retaining mandated examinations.

The ministry has already endorsed several civil‑society proposals submitted during a social dialogue, and a revised draft will be released before the final decree is promulgated.
