Hungary tourism subsidies face corruption and cartel allegations

Allegations of corruption and cartel behavior have emerged regarding the Kisfaludy tourism development program in Hungary. Following a review of nearly 23,000 subsidy contracts by the economic ministry, reports suggest significant breaches of trust and procurement irregularities.

David Rasztovits, CEO of Digitális Turizmus Zrt., noted that while the program was marketed as a way to support small and medium-sized enterprises, it appears to have benefited a narrow circle of government-linked interests. Data indicates that of the funds allocated, more than half were distributed through unique, non-competitive decisions rather than standard tenders. Specifically, just 108 contracts accounted for 60 percent of the total amount.

The controversy involves claims that billions of forints were directed to entities linked to prominent political figures and their business circles, leading to accusations of real estate accumulation under the guise of tourism development.
