Hungary watermelon inspections result in 1.5 million forint in fines
The National Authority for Trade and Consumer Protection (NKFH) and affiliated government offices have concluded inspections of watermelon sales across more than 400 locations in Hungary. The checks covered both domestic and imported watermelons, including roadside and temporary sales points.
While the quality of the watermelons was found to be generally satisfactory, with no traces of excessive pesticide residues or unauthorized substances, authorities identified significant issues regarding labeling and traceability. Specifically, many products lacked proper indication of their country of origin or quality class.
Due to a lack of verifiable traceability, approximately 5,000 kilograms of watermelon had to be destroyed. In total, 34 fines exceeding 1.5 million forints were issued. Despite these findings, officials noted an improvement in conditions compared to the previous year.
