Péter Magyar announces wealth tax and small business tax reforms

During a nationwide tour stop in Szolnok, Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced several major economic and social policy shifts. A central pillar of the Tisza government's agenda is the introduction of a wealth tax, scheduled to take effect on January 1, 2027. Magyar indicated that the tax may be more stringent than previously suggested, noting that for assets exceeding 500 billion forints, the rate could rise above 1 percent.

Additionally, the government plans to reform the 'kata' small business tax system. The proposal includes expanding eligibility to include retirees, students, and those with secondary employment, while also allowing these businesses to invoice companies and organizations. To support this expansion and ensure social security and pension rights, the monthly 'kata' tax rate is expected to increase, potentially in one or two steps. The annual revenue threshold for this system may also rise to 19 million forints.

In the social sector, Magyar pledged to launch multi-billion forint programs this year to reduce medical waiting lists, aiming to significantly shorten wait times for both inpatient and outpatient care by 2027. Regarding industrial development, the Prime Minister stated that the planned electrolyte factory in Szolnok will not proceed under the current Tisza administration.

The tour was briefly disrupted in Szolnok when an individual threw an egg and a liquid towards the stage, an incident Magyar addressed by calling the protesters 'frustrated compatriots.'
