Europe weather: Heatwaves and storms persist during seasonal transition
Central Europe and the Balkans are experiencing highly variable weather patterns as summer transitions into autumn. In Hungary and Slovakia, a cold front is expected to bring temporary relief from intense heat, though temperatures are likely to remain high, often exceeding 30 degrees Celsius. Thunderstorms, heavy rain, and gusty winds are forecasted for several regions, particularly in the Transdanubian area.
In the Balkans, experts warn that the region is in a “red zone” for climate change. Professor Nusret Drešković of the University of Sarajevo highlighted that the area faces extreme weather intensification, including prolonged droughts and devastating floods. Additionally, research indicates that extreme heatwaves are linked to over 30 distinct health issues beyond simple dehydration, such as kidney failure and exacerbated mental health conditions.
Long-term seasonal outlooks for the 2026/2027 winter suggest a warmer-than-average season for much of Europe due to potential Super El Niño effects. While the Balkans may see increased precipitation, it may not translate to significant snowfall due to milder temperatures, potentially impacting regional ski resorts.
