Hungary faces severe weather and holiday traffic restrictions

Hungary is bracing for significant weather disruptions and logistical changes due to the upcoming national holiday on October 23, marking the 70th anniversary of the 1956 Revolution.

A Mediterranean cyclone is bringing heavy rain and high winds to the country. Meteorologists have issued warnings for several counties, including Pest, Baranya, Fejér, Győr-Moson-Sopron, Komárom-Esztergom, Somogy, and Veszprém. Wind gusts could exceed 90 km/h in higher elevations and near Lake Balaton, while heavy precipitation is expected in various regions.

In conjunction with the holiday, a truck ban for vehicles exceeding 7.5 tons will be in effect on Friday, October 23, from 7:00 to 23:00. Exceptions are made for vehicles transporting live animals or perishable goods. Additionally, major retail chains including Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, SPAR, Penny, and Auchan will be closed on the holiday, though some smaller shops and gas stations may remain operational.
