Hungary weighs return to Eurovision after seven‑year hiatus

Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar said the government will commission a study to assess the conditions under which Hungary could re‑enter the Eurovision Song Contest. The proposal was announced during a recent visit to Vienna, where Magyar told Austrian broadcaster ORF that the culture minister or a state secretary will examine the possibility of a comeback. Hungary last participated in 2019 and withdrew without an official explanation, although media linked the decision to the previous administration’s conservative stance and criticism of LGBTQ‑related content associated with the contest. Magyar added that there is no reason for Hungary not to compete and noted a surge of public inquiries since taking office.

If the initiative proceeds, Hungary could appear on the Eurovision stage again after a seven‑year absence.
