Hungary wildlife collision risk rises during red deer rutting season

The autumn rutting season for red deer has begun in Hungary, leading to increased wildlife activity and heightened risks for motorists. In the Mátra and Bükk mountain ranges, the rutting typically intensifies around mid-September as stags become more active and vocal to attract females and defend territory.

Authorities and forestry organizations, including Gemenc Zrt. and Bakonyerdő, have noted increased movement. In some areas, such as Bakony, restrictions on forest visits have been implemented between September 1 and October 15. Drivers are warned to exercise extreme caution, particularly during dawn and dusk, as deer may behave unpredictably and may not flee from headlights.

Due to the significant weight of adult red deer, collisions can cause severe damage to vehicles, potentially impacting windshields and passenger compartments. Statistics from the Wildlife Management Database indicate a rising trend in large game fatalities caused by vehicles, with over 7,700 incidents recorded in 2025, representing a 16 percent increase from the previous year.
