Hungary's Danube Institute dismantled, leaders shift network to US

Following the defeat of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán in the 12 April elections, Hungary's new government appointed Ildikó Veres as a special commissioner to oversee the Danube Institute, a think tank funded by the state‑backed Batthyány Lajos Foundation. The commissioner ordered the dismissal of the institute's international fellows and halted its spending.

In response, the institute's leadership quietly created a U.S. entity to preserve its network of scholars and writers. The new organization is reportedly represented by the law firm of Elon Musk’s attorney. American author Rod Dreher, a former Danube Institute fellow, declared that “Hungary is over,” reflecting the think tank’s loss of influence within the trans‑Atlantic conservative movement.

The Danube Institute, once housed in a luxury villa on Budapest’s Várhegy, had assembled dozens of foreign researchers to promote a Christian‑conservative agenda aligned with Orbán’s government. Its restructuring marks a sharp turn in Hungary’s domestic policy toward foreign‑funded think tanks.
