Hungary's Diabetes Union warns heat wave threatens blood‑sugar and blood‑pressure control

Hungary’s national Diabetes Association (CEOSZ) cautions that the prolonged summer heat wave poses serious health risks for people with diabetes. Extreme temperatures increase fluid and salt loss, cause vasodilation, and directly destabilise blood‑glucose levels. Dehydration alone can raise glucose, while heat‑induced blood‑pressure swings may lead to dizziness, faintness or faint‑like episodes.

The association urges patients – about 1.2 million in Hungary – to ensure regular fluid intake, store insulin and other medicines away from high heat, and monitor blood‑sugar and blood‑pressure more frequently, especially during travel, intense activity or unusual fatigue. CEOSZ also offers online sessions on managing diabetes in hot weather. These recommendations aim to prevent serious complications during the current heat‑wave conditions.
