The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Hungary says humanity is consuming natural resources 73 % faster than the planet can regenerate, equivalent to living on 1.73 Earth. This ecological overshoot is marked by a global “overconsumption day” that will fall on 30 July 2026.

Hungary’s own overshoot day arrived on 24 June 2024, later than the global average but still earlier than many other nations. WWF notes that if every person consumed like residents of Qatar, the world would reach overshoot on 4 February; for Luxembourg on 17 February; and for Singapore on 23 February. Countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal and Ethiopia remain below the planet’s biocapacity.

The organization attributes the overshoot to heavy reliance on fossil fuels, excessive energy and raw‑material use, and unsustainable agricultural practices. In Hungary the consequences are already visible as more severe droughts, extreme weather events, drying wetlands and declining biodiversity. WWF calls for both individual lifestyle changes – such as mindful energy and water use – and systemic shifts, including phasing out fossil fuels and expanding renewable, green energy sources.
