Paks Nuclear Power Plant output drops amid Hungarian energy crisis
Hungary is facing an energy crisis driven by a severe heatwave and record-low water levels in the Danube River. These conditions have severely impacted the Paks Nuclear Power Plant, which relies on the river for cooling. The plant's output dropped to approximately 240 MW, significantly lower than its typical 2 GW capacity.
In response, MAVIR activated emergency protocols to prevent a blackout. To stabilize the grid, the government requested voluntary consumption reductions. According to Prime Minister Péter Magyar, there was significant national cooperation: approximately 84% of Hungarians reduced their electricity use, and 78% reduced water consumption. Additionally, roughly 1,000 large companies reduced their electricity consumption by over 500 MW during critical periods.
The crisis has also ignited political debate regarding infrastructure resilience and energy policy. Critics have raised concerns about the slow adaptation of the energy sector to climate change and the future of the Paks II expansion project. While the immediate emergency has eased, the government has signaled intentions to invest in wind energy and grid stability to better prepare for future climate-related challenges.
