Hungary's EU funds expected to have moderate impact on GDP growth
An analysis by GKI Gazdaságkutató Zrt. indicates that while 5,900 billion HUF in European Union funds is available to Hungary, the direct impact on economic growth may be moderate.
According to the report, approximately 969 billion HUF of these funds is designated for the retroactive reimbursement of already completed projects, which does not generate new real economic demand. Additionally, high import requirements for several EU-funded investments mean a portion of the funds will be spent on foreign goods and services.
GKI estimates that the funds will increase the GDP growth rate by only 0.1 to 0.2 percentage points in 2026 and 2027. However, the funds are expected to provide significant relief regarding national debt and financing. The Magyar Nemzeti Bank (MNB) previously estimated that accessible EU funds could reduce the GDP-to-debt ratio by 1.1 percentage points in 2026. Furthermore, the net effect of the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF) agreement could improve the 2026 budget balance by 491 billion HUF, representing roughly 0.5% of GDP.
