Hungary's euro adoption depends on factors beyond Maastricht criteria

An analysis by GKI Gazdaságkutató Zrt. suggests that for Hungary, adopting the euro is a strategic tool rather than an end goal, intended to help the nation escape the middle-income trap and ensure long-term economic success. The significance of this transition is compared to Hungary's 2004 accession to the European Union.

While Hungary currently meets only the inflation criterion of the Maastricht requirements, market indicators such as decreasing government bond yields suggest investors may be pricing in a relatively smooth transition. However, GKI identifies four critical areas beyond the formal Maastricht criteria that will determine the success of the adoption: the international geopolitical environment, structural economic challenges (including low productivity and stagnant investment), the structure of the fiscal environment, and the implementation of an optimal monetary policy.

Addressing these challenges will require managing rising investment needs in defense, green energy, and human capital while reducing the current budget deficit to meet EU standards.
