Hungary's Fidesz‑linked media outlets face political interference and financial strain

Former mayor Dézsi Csaba András of Győr is accused by former staff of directly influencing editorial decisions at the municipal Győr Plusz Media, including approving front‑page layouts and selecting featured content. He denied the claims, saying he only reviewed interviews. Former director Knézy Jenő acknowledged regular coordination with the city hall but said he was unaware of direct editorial control. Critics say political influence persisted after Dézsi left office, with Fidesz faction leader Fekete Dávid allegedly providing pre‑written material.

Separately, the newspaper Népszava fell into debt to the Fidesz‑aligned Mediaworks after government advertisements were withheld. Owner Leisztinger Tamás has not responded to inquiries. Mediaworks cancelled the printing and distribution contract, leaving Népszava to publish only online. Mediaworks accused the government ads of covering inflated printing and distribution costs, highlighting broader restructuring of pro‑government media assets.
