Hungary's forests and crops suffer accelerated drought damage

Climate change has sped up the drying of trees in Hungary, with prolonged droughts and altered rainfall patterns weakening forest stands. In the 150‑hectare Hrabovszki family forest in Békés, oaks planted 50‑90 years ago are dying earlier, likely due to atmospheric drought that limits root water uptake. The weakened trees become more vulnerable to pests, prompting recommendations to avoid re‑planting the same species and to focus on drought‑tolerant native plants.

Agricultural experts note that nutrient management can boost plant drought tolerance. Potassium supports cell water balance, stomatal function, and osmotic adjustment, helping crops stay greener longer under water stress. Phosphorus enhances root development, enabling deeper water extraction. Balanced macro‑ and micronutrient supplies can reduce yield losses during dry spells.
