Hungary's Gajdos László says new climate law to be adopted by November

Environment Minister Gajdos László announced that the government will submit its draft climate law for a societal consultation in September, with the aim of enacting the legislation in November. The proposed law targets water retention, restoration of natural habitats and landscapes, and assigns clear responsibilities to economic actors for climate protection. It also emphasizes cooperation with civil‑society organisations throughout both the drafting and implementation phases.

Calling the recent summer heatwave, water shortages and the drying of Lake Velence a clear sign of accelerating climate change, Gajdos said immediate action is required. He stated, “The new climate law will focus on adapting to inevitable impacts and strengthening our resilience,” and highlighted the importance of safeguarding water resources and natural ecosystems as a guarantee of Hungary’s future.

The minister outlined a tight timetable: a public consultation in September, followed by final parliamentary approval expected in November, aiming to give Hungary a comprehensive climate protection framework.
