Hungarian families can claim up to 20% tax refund for school‑year expenses
The Hungarian government has introduced measures to ease the cost of the new school year. Families can claim a personal‑income‑tax rebate of 20 % on eligible school‑related purchases through a pension‑fund account, with a maximum refundable amount of HUF 150,000 per child. Eligible items include textbooks, notebooks, stationery, clothing, sports gear and digital devices, as well as university‑related fees for students up to age 25.
A separate school‑year support programme provides a total grant of HUF 100,000 per child, paid in two installments: HUF 50,000 cash by 24 August and the remaining HUF 50,000 as a voucher in November. The scheme is expected to benefit about 400,000 children, down from an earlier estimate of 700,000 families. The support is part of broader tax‑relief measures such as doubled family tax allowances and personal‑income‑tax exemptions for mothers.
Together, the tax rebate and the grant aim to offset rising school‑supply prices and reduce the financial burden on Hungarian households during the back‑to‑school season.
