Hungary's June births fall and natural population decline continues

In June 2026 Hungary recorded 5,790 births and 9,167 deaths, narrowing the natural population loss to 3,377 people, down from a loss of 3,511 in June 2025. Births were 2.6% lower and deaths 3.1% lower than the same month a year earlier. Marriage registrations rose to 4,942, an 8.9% increase year‑on‑year.

For the first half of 2026, total births totaled 34,312, 2.0% fewer than in the same period of 2025, while deaths fell to 62,330, 4.1% fewer. The total fertility rate measured 1.27 children per woman, slightly below the 1.28 rate recorded a year earlier and far under the 2.1 level needed for population replacement. Regional differences were noted, with the steepest birth decline in Budapest (‑11.4%) and the strongest increase in North Hungary (+5.5%).
