Hungary's livestock and crops suffer under extreme heatwave

Heatwaves linked to climate change are putting Hungarian agriculture under severe strain. Livestock experts warned that high temperatures cause heat stress in cattle, sheep and poultry, leading to reduced milk, meat and egg production, increased water consumption and slower feed conversion. Early signs include rapid breathing, seeking shade and rising body temperature. Researchers stress the need for continuous monitoring of temperature‑humidity index (THI) and the adoption of shading, ventilation and targeted cooling systems such as misting jets to protect animals.

At the same time, the National Agricultural Chamber reported that crops on the Alföld plain are experiencing critical stress. Nighttime temperatures above 18‑20 °C prevent plants from recovering, while daytime highs over 35 °C impair photosynthesis. The resulting atmospheric drought reduces yields, degrades quality and can cause flower drop, especially in peppers. The chamber advises drip irrigation, mulching and balanced fertilisation to mitigate damage. Both sectors face rising costs for energy‑intensive cooling and irrigation, threatening farm profitability and potentially pushing food prices higher.
