Hungary's Paks nuclear plant shutdown amid Danube low water crisis

Extreme heat and record low water levels in the Danube have forced Hungary to shut down most of its Paks nuclear power plant, leaving only a single turbine operating. The loss cuts about 1,750 MW of generation, roughly 40 % of the country's annual electricity output. Prime Minister Peter Magyar announced the shutdown and warned of critical days for the power system.

Romania’s Cernavoda plant also suffered, with one reactor offline and a second considered for shutdown. Romanian authorities detonated explosives to clear a channel and divert water into the Danube to sustain the plant. Serbia reported electricity supply difficulties linked to the same low river levels.

Hungary’s government asked large industrial consumers to voluntarily reduce power use, achieving cuts of over 630 MW, while the water level in Budapest fell about 10 cm below the previous record low.
