Hungary's PM Peter Magyar tackles water crisis after Szada loses tap water

During an extraordinary parliamentary session, Prime Minister Peter Magyar opened with a call for national unity and urgent water conservation as a severe heatwave pushes water demand 55 % above normal. The government presented measures including the dissolution of the Sovereignty Protection Office and adjustments to tax and health‑care legislation. In the same week, the town of Szada experienced a total loss of tap water, affecting roughly 4,500 residents. The outage spread to parts of Veresegyház after water consumption far exceeded the capacity of storage tanks. Emergency response teams deployed military trucks, water‑bag distributions and mobile water points, delivering thousands of litres of water and promising additional supplies. The incident highlights the strain on Hungary’s water infrastructure amid unprecedented summer temperatures.
