Hungary's ruling Fidesz party charts major parliamentary faction overhaul

The Fidesz parliamentary group, currently composed of 43 members, is set to replace roughly 10‑15% of its MPs by the end of the year. The reshuffle aims to build a younger, more professionally skilled team that can help the party regain a two‑thirds super‑majority in the next election. The changes target legislators affected by the 12‑year term limit introduced in the 2021 constitutional amendment, as well as those who have been less active in parliamentary work.

Recent departures include Gulyás Gergely, who left the faction’s leadership in mid‑July, and Peter Szijjártó, who relinquished his parliamentary mandate to pursue a career in the private sector. Party officials may also call for discussions with frequently absent members such as Lázár János. Communication director Bertalan Havasi emphasized that a pool of young talents with strong communication, economic and energy expertise is ready to take over.

Critics describe the term‑limit rule as part of an "constitutional coup" that narrows political competition and warn of an authoritarian drift, accusing the EU of remaining silent on Hungary’s democratic backsliding.
