HVG releases 2027 ranking of Hungary's top high schools

The HVG 2027 high school rankings have been released, identifying the top 100 secondary institutions in Hungary based on graduation exam results, university entrance scores, and competency assessments. For the first time in the ranking's history, a non-Budapest school reached the top three, with the Lovassy László Gimnázium in Veszprém securing third place.

The top two positions were taken by Budapest institutions: Eötvös József Gimnázium in the V. District ranked first, followed by Toldy Ferenc Gimnázium in the I. District. The top ten list is dominated by Budapest schools, though several regional institutions appear in the top 20, including schools from Győr, Pannonhalma, Zalaegerszeg, Szombathely, and Debrecen.

The ranking methodology was updated this year to include science competency scores, which may result in more significant shifts in placement compared to previous years. Out of the 100 ranked schools, 44 are located in Budapest and 56 are in regional areas. Cities like Győr, Debrecen, and Kecskemét each have four schools in the top 100. Approximately 20% of the listed institutions are church-run, with the Piarista Gimnázium ranking highest among them at 11th place. The Alternatív Közgazdasági Gimnázium was named the top foundation or private school, placing 31st.
