Hungary's Transport Minister Announces Overhaul of Mátra Region Public Transit
Transport Minister Dávid Vitézy said a new MÁV‑Volán timetable will take effect on 20 June in the Mátra region. The plan adds more frequent train and bus services, better connections and a unified network linking towns such as Eger, Salgótarján, Gyöngyös, Pétervására and Pásztó. Direct two‑hourly routes will run between Salgótarján and Eger on two separate lines, while Gyöngyös will receive a new bus‑turnaround beside its railway platform to ease transfers between InterRégió trains and regional buses. Tourist destinations like Kékestető, Galyatető and other Mátra sites will gain additional direct services, evening and weekend lines, and tighter scheduling to reduce travel gaps that previously hindered the area.
The reforms aim to treat the region as a single transport system rather than isolated local islands, improving accessibility for residents and visitors alike.
