Hungary's used electric cars hit highest prices as Toyota president warns of EV takeover

In May 2026 the average price of used electric vehicles on Hungary’s Használtautó.hu portal rose to 11.7 million forints, making them the most expensive segment on the market. Hybrid cars averaged 11.04 million forints, while hybrid prices fell 11.6 % year‑on‑year and electric‑car prices rose 1.1 %. The share of cheap listings (under 2.5 million forints) dropped to 36 %, a four‑point decline, and electric cars accounted for 4.4 % of all advertised vehicles.

Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda expressed concern that “my biggest fear is that everyone will switch to battery‑electric cars,” saying he feels “very alone” in defending internal‑combustion engines. He warned that rapid EV adoption could threaten engine‑supplier jobs and emphasized a “golden middle way” through hybrids or hydrogen. Toyoda noted the company is developing a 2.0‑litre turbo engine paired with a small battery pack and electric motor to deliver roughly 400 horsepower.
