Hungary's Velencei Lake faces historic low water levels

The water level of Hungary's Velencei Lake has fallen to about 55 cm, just above the lowest figure recorded in September 2022, and experts warn it could dip to around 30 cm by the end of the summer. The decline reflects a decade‑long deficit in precipitation, heightened evaporation during heat waves, and the absence of sufficient inflow from the Danube. Past droughts have already reduced the lake’s volume by nearly half, and without adequate storage the lake may split into separate shallow basins.

Authorities note that major infrastructure projects, such as the reconstruction of the Zámolyi and Pátkai reservoirs, have been planned but remain unfinished, limiting the ability to capture and release water when needed. Recent investments have focused on shoreline redevelopment and tourism facilities rather than water‑resource solutions. The new environmental minister has pledged a water‑law amendment, sustainable water‑supplement schemes, and full renovation of the river‑bank system, but implementation details are still pending. Scientists also point out the lack of a dedicated limnological institute for Velencei, unlike Lake Balaton, hindering comprehensive climate‑adaptation planning. Local officials and water‑management experts call for coordinated, non‑partisan action to avert further degradation of the lake’s ecological and recreational value.
