Hungary grapples with intense heatwave, health alerts and record low water in Velencei Lake

A severe heatwave is sweeping Hungary, with daytime temperatures repeatedly topping 30 °C and peaks of 35‑38 °C forecast for the week. Health authorities have issued second‑level heat alerts, urging the public to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activity during the hottest hours, and watch for signs of heat‑related illness such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Cooling centers, such as the Faluház in Bordány, are designated safe spaces for those without adequate air‑conditioning.

Hospitals, including the Bács‑Kiskun County Teaching Hospital, have activated extra cooling equipment and maintenance safeguards to protect patients and staff during the extreme temperatures. Public advice also covers practical measures for indoor comfort and better sleep, ranging from shading windows to using cold water bottles under bedding.

The prolonged heat is driving rapid evaporation in the Velencei Lake basin. Water level measurements at Agárd fell to just 52 cm, setting a new negative record and leaving many beaches closed. The drop threatens recreation, local tourism and the lake’s ecological balance, while highlighting the deteriorated condition of the Zámolyi and Pátkai reservoirs that supply supplemental water. Authorities note that significant investment will be required to restore these water‑storage facilities and mitigate further declines.
