Huniso leaders reject calls to end Gold Fields Tarkwa Mine lease
Opinion leaders and youth representatives from Huniso and surrounding communities in Ghana's Western Region have formally rejected calls to block the 20-year lease renewal for Gold Fields Ghana’s Tarkwa Mine. The group, known as the Concerned Opinion Leaders of Huniso and Surrounding Communities, argued against the "Apinto Shared Prosperity Proposal," which seeks to transfer the mine to a wholly Ghanaian-owned company.
Convener Nana Kwesi Ansah described the takeover proposal as "reckless, economically unviable and deeply disingenuous." He emphasized that large-scale mining requires significant capital, technical expertise, and strict adherence to international environmental and safety standards that a local takeover might struggle to maintain. The group warned that disrupting current operations could jeopardize the livelihoods of thousands of employees, contractors, and local businesses in the catering, transport, and engineering sectors.
Defending Gold Fields' record, the group noted the company's contributions through the Gold Fields Ghana Foundation, citing investments in roads, health infrastructure, water projects, and education. Rather than ending the lease, the group urged the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Minerals Commission to negotiate stronger community commitments, including improved local employment opportunities, technical training, and the completion of outstanding regional development projects.
