Hunsrück peace movement marks 40 years since record protest
Forty years after the largest protest rally in the history of Rhineland-Palatinate, organizers are calling for renewed attention to nuclear disarmament. The massive demonstration took place on October 11, 1986, in the Hunsrück region, where tens of thousands gathered to protest the stationing of US cruise missiles.
Heidrun Kisters, a former member of the coordination committee for the nationwide peace movement, stated that the warnings issued by the movement remain highly relevant today. She noted that the modernization of nuclear weapons, the rise of unpredictable autocrats, and the influence of artificial intelligence have increased the risk of escalation.
In Kastellaun, an exhibition at the ‘Haus der regionalen Geschichte’ documents the Cold War and the peace movement in Hunsrück. Kisters emphasized the importance of bringing these historical lessons into schools to educate younger generations about the dangers of a nuclear arms race.
