Hunter Region experts warn of increased snake activity

Wildlife experts are warning residents in the Hunter Region of increased snake activity due to a warmer than usual winter. Brandon Gifford from the Australian Reptile Park noted that the warmer weather has prompted snakes to begin feeding and breeding earlier than expected, leading to a higher volume of reports.

To maintain safety for families and pets, experts recommend keeping doors and windows closed, trimming lawns, and removing debris like timber or metal scraps from backyards that can serve as shelters. If a snake is encountered, officials advise against approaching it and suggest calling a professional snake catcher instead. In the event of a bite, immediate first aid—such as applying a pressure immobilisation bandage—is recommended.
