Hunter region hospitals rank among worst in NSW for surgery waits

A new report by Compare the Market has identified several hospitals in the Hunter region with some of the longest elective surgery wait times in New South Wales. Maitland Hospital ranked as the third lowest in the state, with only 61.2 per cent of its 2,384 elective procedures completed within clinically recommended time frames.

Other regional facilities also underperformed relative to recommendations. Kurri Kurri Hospital ranked sixth lowest with 70.4 per cent of procedures completed on time, while John Hunter Hospital ranked ninth lowest at 73.6 per cent. In contrast, Muswellbrook Hospital led the state with 99.8 per cent of surgeries completed within recommended time frames, significantly exceeding the national average of 80.7 per cent.

The report utilized public hospital waiting-list data from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare and the Productivity Commission. Steven Spicer, executive general manager of health at Compare the Market, noted that extended wait times may drive patients toward private healthcare options.
