Hunter River experts advocate for natural flood management
At the Hunter River Forum held in Singleton, river management experts advocated for natural flood management to better prepare the Hunter River catchment for future flood events. This approach involves increasing vegetation within riverbanks and riverbeds, as well as utilizing natural systems like soils, contours, and wetlands to increase water storage across the catchment.
By making rivers ‘messy’ through increased vegetation, the method aims to de-synchronize peak flows from tributaries to reduce downstream flood levels. While experts noted this strategy is effective for minor, moderate, and some major floods, they cautioned it may not be sufficient for catastrophic events, such as those seen in the Wilsons River in 2022 or the Manning River in 2025.
