Hunter Valley Operations mine exit strategy requirement removed
Concerns have been raised regarding the removal of a key condition from the previous approval for Hunter Valley Operations (HVO). The NSW Planning Department and HVO owners reportedly removed a requirement for the company to create a mine exit strategy.
An exit strategy is viewed as a vital tool to support the workforce and minimize the socio-economic impacts associated with mine closures. The historical closure of the BHP Steelworks in Newcastle is cited as a potential model for successful worker transition. During that process, the company implemented a program called ‘Pathways,’ which provided workers with one-on-one coaching and retraining opportunities to facilitate career changes following the site's closure.
