Hunter Valley post-mining land use controls to create 7,000 jobs

New post-mining land use controls have been finalized for key sites in the Hunter region, aiming to unlock more than 7,000 jobs through the development of industrial precincts. The initiative utilizes existing rail, road, power, and water infrastructure to support new enterprises and economic growth.

The Mount Arthur Coal site is expected to support up to 5,900 new jobs. Additionally, the Muswellbrook site, owned by BHP, is slated to end mining operations in 2030, with two areas already zoned for new industry near major highways and a rail loop.

The project follows a $5 million federal government investment alongside in-kind support from the New South Wales government. Federal Minister for Industry and Innovation Tim Ayres stated the plans support the region's transition from coal mining to new industrial opportunities.
