Huntingdonshire District Council leader survives no-confidence vote

Sarah Conboy has retained her position as leader of Huntingdonshire District Council after a motion of no confidence was defeated. The vote, proposed by Conservative group leader Ross Martin, concluded with 18 votes in favour and 24 against, with eight abstentions.

The motion was prompted by controversy surrounding proposals to develop new homes and community spaces on local bus stations and car parks in Huntingdon, St Ives, and St Neots. During the debate, Martin criticized the administration's handling of the consultation process, suggesting a lack of accountability regarding the plans.

Conboy expressed regret over the concern caused to local residents and admitted that the council “got this wrong” regarding the development proposals. The political tension follows the recent collapse of the council's Liberal Democrat-led coalition after two Green Party councillors left the administration. Currently, no single party holds an outright majority of the 52 seats on the council.
