Huánuco municipal elections reveal significant gender gap in leadership
In the Huánuco region of Peru, recent municipal election results reveal a significant gender gap in local governance. According to data from the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE), only six women were elected to mayoral positions out of 84 provincial and district municipalities, representing just 7% of female leadership.
In the province of Huánuco, Vilma Dina Vara Chávez of the 'País para Todos' party was elected mayor of the Amarilis district, the only female leader among the twelve municipalities in that province. In Leoncio Prado, Dora Susy Príncipe Ortega of 'Somos Perú' won in the Pueblo Nuevo district. The Huamalíes province saw the highest female representation with two mayors: Gaby Tocas Saavedra in Jircán and Luz Rosaura Rosales Ramos in Monzón.
Other female victories include Mercy Alfonsita Valdivia Ruiz in the Yuyapichis district of Puerto Inca. In the Ambo province, Very Yajayda Velásquez Ramírez is set to assume the mayoralty of the Conchamarca district through legal succession following the exclusion of the original candidate. Conversely, six high-altitude provinces—Lauricocha, Dos de Mayo, Huacaybamba, Marañón, Pachitea, and Yarowilca—reported no female mayors.
