HURIWA criticizes delay in NIPSS data breach investigation

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has criticized the Nigeria Police Force and the National Data Protection Commission (NDPC) for failing to act on petitions regarding an alleged data breach at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS).

The petitions, originally submitted in July 2025, allege the unauthorized interception and use of private digital correspondence belonging to PRNigeria Publisher, Alhaji Yushau A. Shuaib, during disciplinary proceedings at NIPSS. The allegations involve a senior naval officer and other officials, including Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullahi Mustapha and Professor Elias Wahab.

HURIWA expressed concern that the lack of progress in the investigation, more than a year after the initial reports, undermines public confidence in the enforcement of the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023 and relevant cybersecurity laws.
