HURIWA urges EFCC to prosecute former governors Okowa and Bello

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to conclude investigations into former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello.

HURIWA reported that a poll of over 6,000 respondents showed 99 per cent of participants disapprove of political parties fielding candidates with unresolved corruption allegations. The association specifically criticized the All Progressives Congress (APC) regarding reports that it may field Okowa for a senatorial contest in Delta North.

Okowa was previously detained in November 2024 during an investigation into the management of N1.3 trillion in derivation funds from the federation account between 2015 and 2023. While HURIWA emphasized that these are allegations under investigation and not proof of guilt, they demanded clarity on the status of the EFCC proceedings.
