Hurricane Isaias makes landfall near Destin, Florida

Hurricane Isaias has made landfall near Destin, Florida, as a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of approximately 105 mph (165 km/h). The storm is the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2026 season, arriving unusually late, a phenomenon attributed in part to El Niño.

Emergency declarations have been issued for several Gulf Coast states, including Florida and Alabama, as authorities order evacuations in certain areas. The storm brings threats of life-threatening storm surges, heavy rainfall, and flash flooding across parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, and the Carolinas.

The hurricane has significantly impacted energy markets, causing disruptions to oil and gas production in the Gulf of Mexico. Approximately 63 percent of regional oil production operations were suspended, removing an estimated 1.3 million barrels per day from the market.

This weather event coincides with a rare meteorological occurrence where tropical systems are simultaneously threatening both the East and West coasts of the United States, a situation not seen on this scale since 1963.
