Hurricane Polo disrupts Mexican asparagus and green onion harvests

Hurricane Polo has disrupted agricultural production in Mexico, specifically impacting asparagus and green onion supplies. Heavy rains and high winds have led to canceled or curtailed harvests, particularly affecting jumbo and large-sized asparagus in the near term.

In Northern Baja, asparagus production is winding down, while Southern Baja is ramping up. While excessive rainfall in Southern Baja may cause crops to mature faster and provide temporary supply increases, it may also lead to an early end to the season. In Mexicali, heavy rains made fields too wet for harvesting and caused temporary power outages at several packing sheds; however, power has been restored and harvests are expected to resume as fields dry.

In the state of Sonora, the storm made landfall near Guaymas, affecting regions like Hermosillo where watermelon and soft squash or zucchini production had recently begun. Growers are currently assessing the long-term impact on these crops, with full evaluations expected within the next 7 to 15 days.
