Hurricane Rachel weakens to Category 1 while new cyclone threat emerges in Gulf of Mexico

Hurricane Rachel has weakened to a Category 1 storm as it moves west through the Pacific Ocean, away from the Mexican coast. Despite its gradual weakening, the system continues to pose risks, including high waves of 5 to 6 meters near the Revillagigedo Islands and significant swells along the coasts of Baja California Sur, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, and Colima.

Simultaneously, meteorologists are monitoring a new area of low pressure in the southwest Gulf of Mexico. The National Hurricane Center reports a 30% chance of this system developing into a tropical cyclone within 48 hours and a 70% chance within the next seven days. This potential development, interacting with a cold front in the Gulf, is expected to bring heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and potential flooding to several Mexican states, including Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Tabasco, and Chiapas.

In response to recent weather events, local authorities in Sinaloa and Michoacán have activated emergency measures and monitoring to assist communities affected by previous rains and surges. In Mexico City, high-alert warnings have been issued for several districts due to torrential rain forecasts.
