Husqvarna's new robot mower tech cuts lightning damage risk in Sweden

Older robot lawn mowers in Sweden often suffered lightning strikes because their guide cables acted as lightning conductors. Insurance company Folksam and retailers in Umeå reported hundreds of damaged units over the past 15 years.

Husqvarna’s latest models replace the ground‑wired guide line with GPS‑based navigation, eliminating the conductive cable. Development manager Sara Gard said the new design "removes the magnet field that draws lightning," greatly reducing the likelihood of damage, though she warned that no system can guarantee complete protection. The company also advises users to unplug the mower and install surge protection when thunderstorms are forecast. Sweden’s meteorological agency SMHI has warned of heavy rain and strong thunderstorms in Västerbotten County, reinforcing the need for precautions.

The change marks a shift in the market as older models are phased out, offering Swedish homeowners a more resilient solution for automated lawn care.
