HVAC experts provide seasonal maintenance tips for air conditioning units

Homeowners are receiving expert advice on how to properly maintain and store air conditioning units during seasonal transitions to prevent damage and health risks.

For central air conditioning units, experts advise against using covers during the winter. Covering a unit can create a shelter for rodents, such as mice, which may chew through wires and components. Additionally, covers can trap moisture inside the unit, leading to the premature corrosion of electronics and parts.

Regarding window air conditioning units, specialists warn that moisture trapped in internal drain trays can lead to the growth of mold, mildew, or biofilm. If these units are not properly cleaned and dried before being stored, the buildup can spread. Experts also note that improper installation angles can cause water to drip inside the unit rather than draining out, potentially softening nearby walls or window frames.
